About Andrew K. Salem, M.D.

Dr. Andrew Salem is a nationally-recognized LASIK eye surgeon who specializes in refractive cataract surgery and laser vision correction. He has performed tens of thousands of vision correction surgeries, participated in several clinical trials and published over a dozen articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Cornea, and Archives of Ophthalmology. He has presented at national conferences and received numerous awards for his research presentations, in addition to being featured as a Top Doctor by H Texas Magazine and TXTopDocs. Known as a “Doctor’s Doctor,” many local physicians and surgeons have entrusted Dr. Salem to perform their eye surgery, in addition to local celebrities, politicians, and pro athletes.

Dr. Salem graduated at the top of his class at UCLA and earned his MD degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed an Ophthalmology residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, and afterwards returned to Southern California for a fellowship in Cornea, External Ocular Diseases, and Refractive Surgery at the world-renowned Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, consistently ranked as one of the top 5 eye hospitals in the world by US News and World Report. Dr. Salem currently serves as an Adjunct Faculty at the University of Houston College of Medicine and College of Optometry, and is continuously sought out to share his expertise and techniques through invited lectures.

Dr. Salem uses only the most state of the art laser technology for his patients. He was one of the first surgeons in the US to implant the Panoptix Trifocal lens implant, and has extensive experience with premium vision correction procedures that reduce dependence on glasses and contacts. Having undergone refractive surgery himself, he is passionate about improving quality of life through vision correction.

During fellowship, Dr. Salem was selected for the ASCRS foreign exchange program, where he spent a week in Verona, Italy training with Italian surgeons on the most advanced anterior segment surgical techniques.

Dr. Salem has also lent his expertise to underdeveloped countries by volunteering his surgical services and training local eye surgeons. He visited Cordoba, Mexico in 2015 for a surgical mission trip, where he joined a team of four surgeons to perform over 150 cataract surgeries on indigent patients.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Salem’s favorite hobby is spending time with his wife Margaret and two sons. He enjoys traveling, fitness, and rooting for his favorite sports teams.

Results of my cataract surgery with Dr. Salem are great. No longer need to wear cheaters to perform every day tasks and I can read again without neck pain and difficulty focusing. All my questions were answered and Liz took excellent care of me throughout the process. She provided timely leadership and reminders for instructions, meds, protocal, and any questions I had. I highly recommend them

Everyone that works here is very professional, helpful, caring and friendly. Dr. Salem did my eye surgery in 2019 and I’ve been seeing him every year since for my annual checkup. It’s like catching up with a good friend. I love that they are continually bringing in new equipment with the latest technology to care for my eyes. I always recommend Diagnostic Eye Center to my family and friends.
